Not Remotely?! Evaluation Options for All Students

Music Artistry Programs (MAP) are in full swing around the state. In Kitsap Chapter, we are fortunate to be able to offer MAP participation to piano, strings, woodwind and voice students due to our uniquely varied membership. But that is not the case in most of our state chapters. And what about teachers and students living in remote areas without a local chapter to join?

My chapter was contacted by a representative for a cohort of strings teachers on the Olympic Peninsula. Long ago, there was a WSMTA chapter “up there,” but it has since faded away. These “orphan” teachers are technically in our district, but functionally it would be difficult to include them in our in-person events like MAP and the Music Literacy Program. Could a local chapter be reactivated for them, perhaps adding some orphan piano teachers too? TBD!

Meanwhile, I was able to provide information on how previously in-person-only events can now be offered virtually, or even in hybrid form. Virtual MAPs have been an option ever since Covid forced us to get comfortable with technology. Virtual MLP testing is available since tests can be provided via download and given in-studio. (MLP tests in Written Theory, Technique, Ear Training, Sight Reading and Rhythm are available for Piano, Treble Instruments, Bass Instruments and of course Alto Clef/Viola.)

MTNA provides another option for a MAP-like experience. The MTNA eFestival (mtna.org >> Engage>> MTNA eFestival) runs year-round and is available to students of any instrument. Experienced teachers view student performance videos and provide detailed written feedback. The $25 entry fee is very affordable. Having a positive experience with this program in the past, I need to remember this option more often for my own studio – for students who weren’t ready for MAP, or who would just benefit from an outside review more than once a year. Check it out if you missed the 2026 MAP train!
